About the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique was created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break down activities into 25-minutes intervals. These intervals are called Pomodoros. During a Pomodoro you focus only on the selected activity and prevent distractions and interruptions as much as possible. Once the time is up, stop working for a 5-minute break and relax. Then wind up the timer again and continue your work. Every 4 Pomodoros you can take a longer break, eat something, take a walk or even take a power nap.

How do you know which activity is next? You start your day with a planning phase. Write down new activities into your inventory. Estimate how many pomodoros each activity will take. If it takes more than 5 to 7 Pomodoros, break it down. Combine tasks which take less than 1 Pomodoro. Then select the activities you want to finish today. Put the most important activity on the top of the list, the least important on the bottom. Then begin with the first activity and watch your progress throughout the day. Replan if necessary.
